Cannabis as a Painkiller?

Can cannabis be used as a legitimate painkiller or is it maybe too mild of a drug? While it is used frequently as a means of making chemotherapy easier, allowing patients to eat more, but many assert that it provides a strong pain relief as well. In a recent study, results showed that patients found little difference between the effectiveness of the two. However, there is a huge difference in the levels of addiction, dependency, and death attributed to these compounds. Cannabis is not entirely safe especially when paired with mental illness or operating heavy machinery, but this is true of any psychoactive substance and is entirely non-toxic.
